Overview
Description
Chronological survey of music history, musical forms, composers, and music literature after 1750 AD. This course is the second in a two-semester sequence that covers Western music from ancient times to the present. MUSC 3202 follows Western music’s development through the Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century periods. The music of the later Classical period (late 18th century, Romantic period (19th century), and early 20th century is typically the music played in concert halls today.
In the course, students will not only study historical information but will follow the development of each of these periods through its composers and their music, all within the context of historical/societal influences. Particular attention will be given to the general stylistic characteristics of each musical era and the historical, technological, and societal reasons for their evolution. The course includes the study of both sacred and secular music in all major genres. Listening to and identifying various styles of music is strongly emphasized.
